Poinsettias

Poinsettias
Watercolour 14 X 18" on Arches 140 lb
This began as a demo for the DeCosmos Art Group in Parksville where they inspired me to push the colours and flow to dizzying heights! It was great fun!

Apples In Violet Bowl

Apples In Violet Bowl
Watercolour on 300 lb Arches paper
How to set up a single thing so it makes a decent composition was the challenge here - along with the vibrant turquoise cloth background (used some artistic licence there). The cast shadows on the fruit appealed to me, and the thinness of the bowl.

Rowemance II

Rowemance II

15 X 11" Watercolour on 300 lb. paper
This is a very special portrait painted of this handsome yacht belonging to close friends. They purchased the right to have me paint something for them at a Rotary auction and this is what they asked for - their yacht with the glacier behind. As always, this became a melding of numerous images as one can never take the :perfect shot" when needed. I tried to trace the yacht for accuracy but it made an awful mess on the paper, so I was forced to freehand draw it. Surprised the hell out of myself when it came out like THIS!

Morning Coffee

Morning Coffee
11 X 15" Watercolour on 300 lb paper

Painted from a still life set up last night. This was done very quickly with only minimal editing in studio. I like the flow it has, and the minimalist colours. I have to fight to resist the urge to clean it up more but I think it would be spoiled if I tightened it up too much. What do you think??

Point At Sturt Bay

Point at Sturt Bay

Texada Island is the largest Gulf Island, situated off the coast of mainland British Columbia (north of Vancouver) - we often bring our sailboat to the marina at Sturt Bay, as we did this day in late August. In the distance, you can see Powell River. I love the fact that the red marker for someone's crab trap is visible in the water because we have to skirt these floats every time we enter or exit the bay. This is a watercolour about 10" X 14" on reag paper.

Red Apples/Green Bowl

Red Apples/Green Bowl

This watercolour was inspired by a still life set up at a fellow artist's studio. We both found the subject VERY busy and the challenge here was to simplify and play down the detail. I loved the colour and shininess of that bowl - still do. Painted Sept 2011 on 9" X 11.5" rag paper.

Comox Bay from the Float Plane Dock

My inspiration:
Comox Bay Marina is a favorite hangout for me, since we have our boat moored there year round. If I wander along the main wharf, eventually I land up here at the little finger the float plane uses for a dock - a spot i have painted many times. It has a handy little bench to sit on and this calm, pretty view of the hill in Comox. Only on Vancouver Island could we have a hospital (St. Joseph's - the buildings you see sticking up) with such a spectacular view!

South From Henry Bay

The inspiration:
We were onboard SHARUTIKA (our 30' Rawson sailboat), on our way across the Strait of Georgia headed for Sturt Bay on Texada Island, when a storm kicked up. We scurried over to Henry Bay (pictured here) to set anchor overnight to wait out the weather. Sitting there, it was hard to believe that there was ANY wind, tucked away behind Denman Island - calm enough to
create this little watercolour right in the stern. The flag whipping around at the mast top told the tale....
